Eighty Steps 05:44
There is a vast basement under my house, filled with dormant, powerful machines. It smells of grease, and wet stone, and the high ceilings are ready to echo with the clang of intense productivity. The machines are the flesh of this living space, its bones, its lungs, its heart. I have come down into this place of means many times. Before, it was as deep as the darkest coal mine, inescapable. But now, there is a stairs, a way to the surface, a climb of eighty steps.

In the wet darkness we raid the grave of a medieval knight. Reaching in through the stinking earth, through the remnants of his casket I grab his shining sword. The knight awakens… his anger is unimaginably terrifying… he rises through the earth, but we run and leap over the graveyard walls… I wake up in bed, heart pounding, holding the green, glowing sword close to my chest. Heart pounding…. Heart pounding…. Heart , pounding….
4.
Rooms upon rooms appear as I walk through these endless chambers. Sunlight floods the high ceilings, the tapestries, the wainscoting… the tables, chairs, art, books… the expansive wooden floors. and still more rooms. My heart bursts. The complex and extraordinary beauty, the sheer infinity of this place. I am sleeping naked on a dock. I wake up and roll into the water. It is immediate, warm and lovely. The sun is shining on me and I lay back and float out to sea with the tide. The beauty of death I am sleeping naked on a dock. I wake up and roll into the water. It is immediate, warm and lovely. The sun is shining on me and I lay back and float out to sea with the tide… to merge with the ocean.
5.
I leap out from the edge of a gorge in an old, wealthy, dense urban neighbourhood. I take flight over my old house… and from a great height looking into its centre, I see a red heart beating inside.

Fishing 05:59
I am fishing in the ocean down by the tower, I catch an angel.

about

To Dream of Silence is a stunning meditation on the human psyche, and the challenges our souls face in times of change. To Dream of Silence is dark, richly textured, and full of heart.

The album chronicles a series of significant dreams experienced by Jeff Reilly between 2008 and 2012, some were harrowing and intense, others astoundingly beautiful, all were deeply transformative.

Jeff Reilly has over 30 years of experience as a musician, producer, composer and as an internationally respected bass clarinet soloist. It seemed time to gather up all that experience and bring these dreams to life through music and narration.

To Dream of Silence occupies a unique sound world. Jeff Reilly’s bass clarinet combines with the pipe organ of long time collaborator Peter-Anthony Togni, the extended percussion of Jerry Granelli, two full string orchestras, and sound sculptures created in the tiny village of East Dover, Nova Scotia by the blacksmith John Little. Rinde Eckert adds a great deal with his sparse and powerful narrations.

Added to the line up is a new work by Canadian composer Christos Hatzis: Extreme Unction. It is a powerful depiction of both the struggles against, and the final acceptance of, the inevitability of death. Death, as this brilliant work by Christos shows us, is the ultimate transition.

Special thanks to FACTOR and the Canada Council for the Arts for their support of this project.
